Isn’t it funny that in a season when we wear the least amount of clothing men seem to make the most sartorial blunders. Socks worn with sandals. Wrong. Flip-flops worn in the city instead of a good pair of shoes. Ouch. Terminator style wraparound shades. Just say no.

Sunglasses have only been a menswear style staple since the 1940s when celebrities and films stars chose to wear them to mask their identities when mingling with the general riff raff.

But they have a history going back much further than that. In prehistoric times Inuit peoples wore flattened walrus ivory ‘glasses’, looking through narrow slits to block harmful reflected rays of the sun. It is even said that the Roman emperor Nero liked to watch gladiator fights through emeralds.

Now that Spring has finally sprung and things are beginning to heat up (a tad), any sartorially conscious man will start to wonder how to make their warm weather wardrobe work a bit harder, as we finally take off those extra layers. A man’s Spring wardrobe is generally a lot more relaxed, even a bit more comfortable but then we have to say more with less.

If you weren’t already aware, the world’s greatest steeplechase The Grand National is on this weekend. With a course that’s two and a quarter miles long, which has 16 of the most famous (and dangerous) fences in racing, it is widely considered to be one of the biggest tests of horsemanship and daring in sport.
